Building My Support Network: The Dream Team That Guided Me

December 30, 20243 min read

When my husband suggested forming a dream team, I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant. At that moment, I was still spinning from the diagnosis, caught up in a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty. “What’s a dream team?” I remember asking, the words almost caught in my throat. But as I sat with the idea and started making those calls, the concept began to take shape.

I needed a network of people who could guide me, support me, and help me navigate this uncharted territory.

The first step was reaching out to the people I trusted most—those who had different strengths and perspectives. My dream team wasn’t just about medical expertise; it was about creating a balance of knowledge, emotional support, and spiritual grounding.

I intentionally chose individuals who represented a mix of Holistic and Western approaches, along with a few who didn’t align with either but brought their wisdom and compassion to the table.

Each member of my dream team brought something unique.

One friend, who was deeply knowledgeable in Holistic practices, introduced me to the idea of Ayurveda and another of the benefits of Shamanic work. He wasn’t just a guide for these alternative paths; he was an inspiration, reminding me that healing is not just physical but also emotional and spiritual.

Another member, a determined advocate of Western medicine, kept me grounded in evidence-based practices and made sure I stayed informed about my medical options. Their perspectives sometimes clashed, but it was in those debates that I found clarity.

And then there were the emotional anchors—people who didn’t necessarily have answers but held space for my fears and frustrations.

One friend became my go-to listener, someone I could call at any hour to cry, vent, or share my victories, no matter how small.

Another was a pragmatist, helping me organize my thoughts and chart a clear path forward when I felt overwhelmed. My husband, of course, was the glue that held it all together, his steady presence reminding me that I was never alone in this fight.

The journey with my dream team wasn’t always smooth. Discussions could be intense, especially when we explored paths that felt unconventional or uncertain. At times, I questioned whether I was making the right decisions or if I was being too idealistic in trying to combine holistic and medical approaches. But those conversations were essential—they forced me to ask the hard questions and take ownership of my choices. Each meeting or phone call brought a new perspective, a piece of the puzzle I hadn’t yet considered.

One of the most powerful aspects of having this team was the sense of collaboration. It wasn’t just about me leaning on them for answers; it was about working together to explore every avenue, brainstorm solutions, and prioritize what felt right for my unique journey. We discussed everything from treatment plans to diet changes, from meditation techniques to surgical options. There was no judgment, only the collective desire to help me find the best path forward.

Through this process, I learned the importance of vulnerability. Letting others into my journey wasn’t easy—it meant admitting I didn’t have all the answers and that I needed help. But in doing so, I discovered a strength I didn’t know I had. My dream team didn’t just provide me with external support; they helped me reconnect with my inner resilience. They reminded me of my agency, my ability to make informed decisions, and my right to advocate for myself.

Looking back, forming this dream team was one of the most critical decisions I made. It gave me a foundation of support that extended far beyond medical advice. It was about love, connection, and the collective power of a group of people who believed in me and wanted the best for me. Together, we built not just a plan, but a framework for navigating the complexities of cancer with hope, clarity, and strength.
