Just Being Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

The Moment That Changed Everything: My Reaction to a Cancer Diagnosis

December 23, 20243 min read

The moment the surgeon said the words, "Sorry, it's cancer," it felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me. My thoughts raced—yet I can't say I really thought anything at all in those first seconds.

It was like my mind hit a reset button, trying to comprehend what had just been said. Cancer? Me? My life? This wasn't supposed to happen. My immediate response was fueled by instinct and urgency.

"Let's do this. Whatever it takes." Those were the first words I managed to say. I was ready to sign the papers for the lumpectomy without hesitation. The surgeon had explained the next steps—removing lymph nodes to ensure the cancer hadn't spread—and I was already mentally gearing up for surgery and whatever came next.

The only option I had at the time was to get on top of this straight away. I was in such a moment of fear that I couldn't think clearly about anything that was said to me. And then came the pause. My husband, steady and thoughtful, placed his hand on mine. "Hang on a minute," he said softly but firmly as if he could sense the fear and determination stirring in my head. "Maybe you want to think about this first."

I looked at him in shock. My initial thought was, "What's there to think about? This was cancer; shouldn't we be doing something right now?" But the look in his eyes as he said to the doctor, "Can we have some time to process all of this?". We left the hospital that day with no papers signed.

Walking out felt surreal as if we were stepping into a world where everything looked the same, but nothing felt the same. On the drive home, was the longest drive home. And then the tears came—hot and unstoppable. I cried for fear of the unknown; I felt that I had no control and I would be sick, I would lose my hair, and I would probably die.

Through it all, my husband remained my anchor. "We'll figure this out," he said, his voice unwavering. "You don't have to go through this alone." And then he said something that shifted everything.

The next thing I heard jolted me back into my reality, and it was something that I had never heard in my life. "You need to put a dream team together, Grace. Call five people who you want in your corner to help you through this."

His words gave me direction when everything else felt chaotic. That drive home was the start of something much bigger than a medical plan—it was the beginning of reclaiming control over my journey.

Suddenly, I felt I needed to get things moving in a way that didn't overwhelm me. This gave me the time and space to make informed choices that reflected not just my diagnosis, but me.

The decision to wait before signing those papers, to step back and form a support network, became a key moment in my story.

It wasn't the first step in a medical journey—it was the first step toward holistic healing, spiritual growth, and taking control of my life in ways I never imagined. Looking back, I realize how crucial it was to allow myself the time to breathe, to process, and to choose. That pause wasn't just about delaying a surgery; it was about reclaiming my peace of mind in a world that suddenly felt out of my control. It was the moment that changed everything.
